What is in a name “galimoto”..?
1) .Galimoto are car toys that children in Africa creatively make/invent to play with.
2) Name for a car and car toys in Chichewa - an African language spoken in Malawi.
3) Name of a book, galimoto written by Karen lynn Williams and illustrated by Catherine stock on the story of an African young boy, kondi, who is determined to build a car, galimoto, made of wires. Though his brother laughs at him, kondi spend all day gathering needed materials, and by the night fall his galimoto is the talk of the village children who all want to play with it.
4) Moto’kali from MotorCar is a Swahili name for Car. The Other name being “gali”.
So Galimoto’Kali a.k.a. GalimotoCar is the combination of all the above, culminating into the real one that young man Ntubanga has created on his own, self reliant, in following and keeping his childhood dream.
It represents the triumph of African children's spirit of self reliance, in creating (kuumba) things out for themselves, out of scratch that somehow gets lost as they grow up towards adulthood.
